Residence-based application route

Applying in Italy

The basics of applying while genuinely living in an Italian municipality, or comune.

Core rule
Applying in Italy requires genuine legal residence in the comune that will process the application.

A residence-based procedure

Applying in Italy means genuinely living there. It is not simply a visit to an ancestral town. You establish legal residence in the comune that will review your claim.

Basic sequence

Prepare before travel
Resolve document, apostille, translation, and naturalization issues in advance.
Enter and reside lawfully
Secure qualifying housing and complete the applicable presence and residence procedures.
Submit to the comune
The local civil-status office reviews the application and communicates with other authorities as needed.
Maintain lawful status
Processing may extend beyond the initial period of lawful stay.
Residence must be real. False or simulated residency can invalidate the procedure and create legal consequences.
