Citizenship by marriage

Jure Matrimonii

A brief introduction to Italian citizenship through marriage or civil union.

Key point
Marriage to an Italian citizen does not itself confer citizenship. The eligible spouse must apply and satisfy the legal requirements.

Citizenship by marriage

Jure matrimonii is an application-based route for an eligible spouse or civil-union partner of an Italian citizen. It is separate from citizenship by descent.

Common requirements

  • The Italian spouse must be recognized as an Italian citizen.
  • The marriage or civil union must be registered in Italy.
  • The applicable waiting period must have elapsed.
  • The applicant generally must demonstrate Italian language knowledge at the B1 level.
  • Criminal-record, security, identity, fee, and document requirements must be satisfied.
Timing matters. The waiting period and starting date can depend on residence, children, and when the Italian spouse acquired citizenship.
